Mentors support the students learning experience and assess the student’s clinical practice and professional suitability against identified performance criteria (see Clinical Logbook and ORA). Assessment should be fair and rigorous. More will be expected of a student as they progress through the programme.

It is important that mentors know what the student is expected to do and at what level. Be guided by the assessment documentation. Please ensure you see the student’s ORA book at the beginning of each placement. A learning contract (within the Logbook) should be agreed between student and mentor at the start of each placement. Please review progress with the student and record this midway through and at the end of the placement. The student also should assess and record their own performance.

All assessment should be reliable and valid.

Reliability

  • All students of the same grade to be assessed in the same way
  • Assessment criteria used is objective
  • Assessments should be reproducible and consistent

Validity

  • The assessment used measures what it is supposed to measure
  • Assessment is relevant to the student’s programme
  • Type of assessment used is achievable
  • The mentor follows established criteria e.g. NMC competencies and Essential Skills Clusters
